Dear Senior Year,
I hope you grabbed a box of tissues because this is about to be an emotional one.
Senior. Year. How did I get here? Where did the time go?
I actually went back to read my letter to my junior self that I wrote for ND Admissions to gather some inspiration for this and all that I thought of while reading it was that it was surreal that I wrote that a year ago. It has been an incredible year. I won’t bore you with the details of things I did (or didn’t do). Instead, I’ll leave you with some wisdom that I learned this year and things that I wish I hadn’t taken for granted when I started at Notre Dame, so that you (prospective or incoming students) can learn from me and make your time at Notre Dame all that much better.
Lesson 1: Cherish Your Friendships
As cliché as it may sound, your friendships truly are one of the most valuable aspects of your college experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of classes, extracurricular activities, and the endless list of responsibilities that come with being a student. But amidst the chaos, don’t forget to nurture the relationships that bring joy and meaning to your life. Whether it’s grabbing coffee with a friend between classes or staying up late laughing until your stomach hurts, cherish those moments and hold onto the friendships that make your college journey unforgettable.
Lesson 2: Find Happiness within Yourself
College can be a transformative time filled with both highs and lows. It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking happiness and validation from external sources – whether it’s academic achievements, social status, or the approval of others. But true happiness comes from within. Take the time to discover what brings you genuine joy and fulfillment, whether it’s pursuing your passions, practicing self-care, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the world around you. Remember that your worth is not defined by external measures of success, but by the love and kindness you show yourself and others.
Lesson 3: Make every moment count
It’s often said that time flies when you’re having fun, but the reality is that time flies regardless of how you spend it. As you navigate the final year of your college journey, seize every opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s exploring new interests, taking spontaneous road trips, or simply savoring quiet moments of reflection, make the most of every moment and embrace the richness of life. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back from experiencing all that college has to offer. Instead, approach each day with an open heart and a spirit of adventure, knowing that the best is yet to come.
As I bid farewell to senior year and embark on the next chapter of my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the memories cherished. To all those who are just beginning their college adventure, remember that the journey is not just about reaching the destination, but about the experiences along the way. Cherish every moment, embrace every challenge, and never forget the incredible privilege of being a part of the Notre Dame family.
