Appropriate course selection is essential to presenting a strong transfer application. If you are applying for admission as a sophomore in an Engineering curriculum, you must have completed or have advanced placement credit for:
*8 semester hours of calculus, through Calculus II
*7 semester hours of chemistry at a level suitable for pre-med majors (includes one credit of lab and 6 credits of lecture)
*4 semester hours of calculus-based physics (includes one credit of lab and 3 credits of lecture)
*3 semester hours of composition
*6 semester hours of history, literature or fine arts, or social science
*In addition, Notre Dame first-year students take six credits of an Introduction to Engineering Systems sequence, so we recommend taking similar courses if available at your original institution.

You must have at least 27 transferrable semester hours to qualify for admission as a Notre Dame sophomore, but be advised that continuing Notre Dame sophomores will have completed 34 semester hours prior to starting sophomore year. Please plan your schedule accordingly.

If you are applying for admission as a junior in an Engineering program, you should have completed additional courses in mathematics, physics, philosophy, theology and the engineering science courses appropriate for the intended engineering program. We suggest that you review the Engineering Web site for specific program requirements: www.nd.edu/~engineer

Finally, be aware that, if your home institution operates on the quarter system, it may be necessary to take additional courses to meet Notre Dame’s requirements. For example, you might need to take three calculus classes to cover the same material that Notre Dame covers in two classes. Generally, 5-credit classes in the quarter system transfer as 4-credit courses in Notre Dame’s semester system, and 4-credit classes in the quarter system transfer as 3-credit courses in Notre Dame’s semester system.

To evaluate your credits during the application process, especially math, science and engineering credits, the Committee requires a copy of the syllabus and a course description for each course on the final transcript.

Admission to the College of Engineering requires you to commit to enrolling in an appropriate engineering curriculum during your first two semesters at Notre Dame
