Arthur Srendi's Pre-College Experience

Arthur Sredni will never forget his summer at Notre Dame. The high school senior from Chicago, Illinois, was a recent Summer Scholars participant in the program’s research computing track.

During his two weeks on campus, Srendi lived in a Notre Dame residence hall and ate with fellow scholars at South Dining Hall. In his research computing course, he was given his own raspberry pi computer so he could experiment with different operating systems and writing programs in Python, and his class took a couple of field trips, including one to the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago.

“I really wanted to see what two weeks of college would be like,” says Srendi. He came away with a better understanding of research computing, a feel for what he wants to study in college, and a sense of what the coursework at a prestigious university is like. Check out this video to learn more about Srendi’s Notre Dame experience.

Summer Scholars is just one of several Pre-College Programs at Notre Dame. We offer other opportunities for rising high school juniors and seniors each summer, including Leadership Seminars and study abroad in Rome and Ireland.

Notre Dame Summer Programs

Summer Scholars: June 23 - July 7, 2018

This two-week program for rising high school juniors and seniors offers more than 20 programs of study. Topics range from astronomy to film production to global health. Students collaborate on coursework outside of designated class times, as they would in any college setting, and they earn one college credit for completing the program.

Scholars also have plenty of opportunities to join in community activities, both on campus and off. They live in a Notre Dame residence hall, eat in the dining halls, and perform service work in the surrounding community, which most scholars say is one of the most meaningful experiences of the program.

Students admitted to Leadership Seminars also spend two weeks living and learning on the Notre Dame campus. The program and students’ travel expenses are paid for by the University and students are eligible to receive one college credit upon completion of the program. Courses are taught by Notre Dame faculty and focus on issues that affect the global community. Students can choose from three tracks: American Arts, Popular Culture, and Social Change; Global Issues: Towards a Just Peace; and Science, Ethics, and Responsibility. This program also offers a meaningful service experience in the local community.
