Applying for Financial Aid at Notre Dame
The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serve as the official applications for need-based financial aid, including University scholarship programs. Unless otherwise noted, additional applications are not required to be considered for all scholarship/grant programs the Office of Financial Aid administers. A student should not wait for an admission decision before submitting the FAFSA and PROFILE. Applications for financial aid must be properly filed every year.

Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC)
The University of Notre Dame participates in the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC) which allows students to submit one packet of supporting documentation to IDOC rather than mailing individual documents to each participating institution to which a student has applied for admission.
CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE applicants will receive communication directly from IDOC regarding the submission of supporting documentation. Families should be prepared to submit this supporting documentation to IDOC by Notre Dame’s priority IDOC deadline. Visit our IDOC FAQ for answers to the most common questions from our prospective students.

The Office of Financial Aid begins mailing Financial Aid Notifications in late March to admitted students who have completed the financial aid process.
Note: To be eligible for federal student aid a student must be a citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States with a valid social security number. In general, students must be degree seeking and be enrolled on at least a half-time basis. Additionally, students may not owe a refund on a federal student grant, nor be in default on a federal student loan.
CSS Noncustodial PROFILE
In reviewing applications for University assistance, information and cooperation from both of the student’s natural parents will be requested. If the biological or adoptive parents are separated, divorced or have never been married, the custodial parent (the parent with whom the student lives) and his or her current spouse (if applicable) should complete the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. The family is encouraged to share information about the noncustodial parent in Section M of the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE.
Upon completion of the CSS/PROFILE, the student will receive an email from the College Board that is to be shared by the student with the noncustodial parent. The email will explain the requirement for the noncustodial parent to complete the CSS Noncustodial PROFILE application.
In order for a student to receive maximum financial aid consideration, we ask that the student make every attempt to secure this information. In cases where the Noncustodial PROFILE cannot be completed by the noncustodial parent, it will be necessary for the student to provide documentation through the College Board IDOC service verifying why the form cannot be completed. Such documentation should be in the form of a letter from one of the following professionals: secondary school administrator (e.g., principal or guidance counselor), attorney, family counselor, clergyperson, or social worker and should state their understanding of the lack of relationship and support between the student and noncustodial parent.
