Faith and Service
“Notre Dame’s character as a Catholic academic community presupposes that no genuine search for the truth in the human or the cosmic order is alien to the life of faith.”
- University of Notre Dame Mission Statement
Context
At Notre Dame we believe each moment of life is graced by the presence of God. We come here to pursue truth. We live here in community. We send ourselves forth from here; our spirits strengthened both by the depth of Catholicism expressed here and by the breadth of faiths practiced within our community.
Openness
The opportunities for worship are constant, the spaces for prayer, contemplation, and celebration plentiful, the questions challenging, the conversation compassionate. No matter the time, place, or way that family members connect with the divine, we believe that the connection between individual and God and between oneself and another is necessary to the health of our community and to the sanctity of our mission.
Holistic
We ask that members of our community explore faith in the context of intellectual inquiry and residential community. In doing so, we challenge ourselves to grow more fully into people who will share with the rest of the world. Just as we believe we cannot search for truth without faith, so too do we believe that we cannot nurture our spirituality without serving others. As students gain knowledge we urge them to grow in faith and compassion. To be educated at Notre Dame is to become a whole person. This is why we say there’s Nowhere Else but Notre Dame.
