First Semester at Notre Dame Bucket List

Author: Luzolo Matundu

Starting college is an exciting time! Here's my list of the top 10 things you should do to make the most out of your first semester at Notre Dame!

Explore the First Year Website

This website made by the Center for University Advising is a great place to learn more about courses and resources at Notre Dame. You'll find a summer timeline, to-do list, and you can sign up to receive their newsletter too which has super helpful reminders for first-year students. Follow them on Instagram to find their latest announcements.

Participate in Welcome Weekend Activities

Welcome Weekend gives people the opportunity to meet new people, learn about their dorms, and learn about Notre Dame traditions. It is a super fun weekend where you'll meet so many amazing new people! I'd encourage first year students to step outside of your comfort zone and take it all in.

Go to Sports Games

Everyone knows about Notre Dame football but in addition to having so much fun tailgating and taking part in all of the fun ND football traditions on campus, be sure to check the weekly emails from ND Athletics to see the free games that are happening on campus for the week. It is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and showcase your school spirit.

Go to Mass

There are multiple Masses everyday throughout campus. Each of our residence halls celebrates the liturgy every week in their own chapel and some have themed Mass like Dillon Hall's famous Milkshake Mass.

Visit the Grotto

Light a candle, see the flames, and enjoy the quiet at the Grotto.

Go to Midnight Drummers Circle

The Band of the Fighting Irish have incredible performances year-round but my favorite is to hear them perform at the Main Building on a Friday before a home football game at midnight. It's definitely something that cannot be missed!

Walk Around the Lakes

Go on a nature walk, see the ducks, and check out the iconic Dome and Basilica lakeview.

Climb the Rock Wall

Push yourself and have a fun adventure by climbing the rock wall in Duncan Student Center. It's free of charge for all students and offers top rope climbing and bouldering.

Go out in South Bend

Sometimes it's good to get off campus to explore the South Bend area by going to the mall, restaurants, and the South Bend Farmer’s Market.

See a Show

Enjoy a show and soak in all the talent at Washington Hall, the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, or at the Morris Inn Performing Arts Center.
