Walk the Walk Candlelight Prayer Service
This month Notre Dame is celebrating the diversity of our campus community. Walk the Walk Week begins on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and continues throughout the week with multiple events, including a candlelight prayer service at the Main Building, faculty presentations, an art exhibit at the Snite Museum of Art, and much more. In fact, the events continue into the following week, ending January 26 with a Fireside Chat and poetry reading featuring Claudia Rankine and Solmaz Sharif.
Initiated in 2015, Walk the Walk Week developed from a recommendation by University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. and the President’s Oversight Committee on Diversity and Inclusion that the Notre Dame community take time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in the week that follows “to both celebrate the diversity that currently exists on our campus and reflect on how might we each take an active role in making Notre Dame even more welcoming and inclusive.”
The week includes a special talk hosted by Notre Dame’s Center for Civil and Human Rights called “40 Years of Civil Rights Advocacy: MLK, Fr. Ted, and lawyering in the public interest.” Russell Lovell (Notre Dame BBA '66) will share his journey from growing up in conservative western Nebraska to becoming an Indianapolis legal attorney and NAACP civil rights lawyer.
On Wednesday, the Center for Social Concerns will host the Social Concerns Fair, which connects students with community service opportunities. Organizations represented include Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, and the Salvation Army.
